Long Exposures are important for successful Astro Photography. Tracking mounts make this possible. However with extended exposure times and long focal lengths, tracking error can ruin an image.

 

Tracking error is caused by the mounts drive mechanism varying speed slightly due to the mechanics and is known as periodic error. Although this can be improved, an Auto Guider tracks the stars to maintain tracking performance and makes adjustment to the Mounts drive system automatically.
